This is a great opportunity to sign up for a Marathon Seminar with Olympic athlete Don Macgregor at the Inchyra Grange, Grangemouth on Wednesday 25th August,18.15 for 18.30
Don Macgregor is the most recent of only 5 Scots to have competed for Britain in an Olympic marathon. He finished 7th in Munich in 1972 just behind the pre-race favourite Ron Hill. He competed in 2 Commonwealth Games, 1970 in Edinburgh (8th) and Christchurch in 1974 (6th) where he set his best time of 2:14:15 which still places him 12th in the Scottish All-time list. During his career Don ran 51 marathons, 24 of which were under 2:20, including 3 gold and 6 silver medals at Scottish Championships between the years of 1965 and 1986. Don was Scottish 6 mile track champion in 1965 and 10 mile track champion in 1966 and represented Scotland at the World Cross Country Championships in 1967 and 1969.
In 1979 and 1980 Don won World Masters’ M40 titles at 10,000m (Hannover – 30:04.2) and marathon (Glasgow – 2:19:23) and still holds Scottish M40 records at 5K, 10K and marathon. In 1983 he won the 1st Dundee marathon at age 42 in a time of 2:17:24 that is still the 5th fastest M40 marathon in the UK.
As with many athletes of that era Donald was mainly self-coached. His extensive knowledge of his own training is augumented by being a keen observer of the training practices of many others including his Scottish and International rivals. He has recently completed a book on his athletics career entitled “Running my Life”.
The evening will consist of a talk from Don on his athletics career and training followed by a question and answer session. Although primarily targeted at coaches the session will also be of interest to long distance endurance runners.
The lecture element will start at 6.30 and tea and coffee will be available from 6.15. Please contact Mary Anderson on mary.anderson@scottishathletics.org.uk to confirm attendance.
