After missing nearly two weeks of training heading towards the most important Cross Country Event of the year and missing the first Hill Race of the year and valuable points in the Carnegie’s Grand Prix because of a chest and throat infection it’s hard mentally to go to a race and not really know if your going to make the finish or not. Anyway got to the start line Carnegie had Andy Symounds who is in great form coming 3rd last week in a field of 500 and Simon Plummer English top runner but no sign of Andre Wright who was 6 places behind Symounds.
I was treating the race a training event, my plan to get out pretty fast then set into my own pace until the last lap(total 3x4kilometre laps) It’s a normal greyhound start everyman for himself, we got strung out and I felt pretty much ok after lap 1 started passing a few people but could see a good amount of people who I would normally beat in front, especially Ian Stewart with the bright Carnegie top with Lewis Lawson about 60 metres in front going into lap 2, wind started to pick a bit more now still felt ok however due to a few hills on the course I knew this would tire a few runners out which I would use to my advantage. Third lap overtook Lewis and started picking off a few runners, landed heavy on my leg groin in the big ditch before coming round towards the crowds at the finish which started to hinder me a bit, by this time the crowds that had gathered to shout you on had gone towards the finish to watch who was going to be crowned Scottish Champion, this year for the first time was young Ally Hay who was crowned Under 20 champion a few years ago(Central)runner so well to him, I could see the usual suspects that were normally behind me but this time in front which is the motivation I need to get myself sorted and training hard again!
I was fourth counter for the club 76th which helped the club to it’s best ever placing as a mens team in the national.
