Wonderwoman Strikes Again

Tommy you know I've got a sore neck

The Draycote 35mile Ultra road race took part today Sunday 22nd Feb 2009 near the city of Rugby where 3 Circuiteers(Gail Murdoch pictured above, Ryan McKenzie and Lynne Kuz set off on Saturday morning to do.

The results I have so far are:

Gail Murdoch: an amazing 4hours 35min

Lynne Kuz 4hours 55mins

Ryan’s first race at marathon and above distance, 5hours 54mins.

This potentially is a qualifier for another bigger challenge which surely puts both ladies in good stead, I’m sure you shall join me on congratulating the guys when you see them next which shall not be this week as I’m going to ban them from the classes from tomorrow 23rd Monday to the following Monday……They are both planning on taking part in the ladies only 10miler Smokies race a week today, as if 35 miles in one go is not enough……so the next time you say to yourself I can’t be bothered think again!!!!!

Also Gail finished 2nd Overall in the Carnegie Harriers Cross Country Grand Prix so another well done and another prize Gail well done!

Tommy Wins the Carnegie Cross Country Grand Prix at the Nationals(Falkirk 21st Feb)

The Carnegie Harriers Grand Prix 2008 started the same weekend as the Aviemore Half marathon last october which Tommy won so he never contested the first event but pick up maximum points from the next 3 events. E

Event 5 was an event that was pretty dear to Tommy’s heart the 7.2 mile Forest Festival in Blairadam woods where he had won each year since 2005, but he was up against stiff competition, Dave Simpson who has beaten Tommy 3 out of 3 times on the Forth road bridge 10k and Andrew Wright who Tommy has never beaten on the hills, it was a very close encounter with Andrew pipping Tommy by 12 seconds and taking maximum points Tommy picked up 49 valuble points to take him into second place behind Ian Johnstone with a race in hand, subsequently Tommy missed the next two races due to helping the Masters win the Nation Masters Relay Championship in Strathclyde Park in January where Tommy found himself being chased by the 4th fastest Master in Scotland Andy Little, but Tommy held on to win for Carnegie and get the fourth fastest leg of the day.

Going into the last day of the Cross Country Grand Prix on Saturday 21st Feb  Tommy needed to finish 7th or better to win the title which he did final results are posted below.

Well done to Circuiteers Peter Humphries who came 4th, he has not been running recently due to the same problem Tommy had and an exceptional very well done to John Fulham who came in fifth in the table!!!!!

4th Counter for Carnegie Harriers at the Scottish National Cross Country Champs

After missing nearly two weeks of training heading towards  the most important Cross Country Event of the year and missing the first Hill Race of the year and valuable points in the Carnegie’s Grand Prix because of a chest and throat infection it’s hard mentally to go to a race and not really know if your going to make the finish or not. Anyway got to the start line Carnegie had Andy Symounds who is in great form coming 3rd last week in a field of 500 and Simon Plummer English top runner but no sign of Andre Wright who was 6 places behind Symounds.

I was treating the race a training event, my plan to get out pretty fast then set into my own pace until the last lap(total 3x4kilometre laps) It’s a normal greyhound start everyman for himself, we got strung out and I felt pretty much ok after lap 1 started passing a few people but could see a good amount of people who I would normally beat in front, especially Ian Stewart with the bright Carnegie top with Lewis Lawson about 60 metres in front going into lap 2, wind started to pick a bit more now still felt ok however due to a few hills on the course I knew this would tire a few runners out which I would use to my advantage. Third lap overtook Lewis and started picking off a few runners, landed heavy on my leg groin in the big ditch before coming round towards the crowds at the finish which started to hinder me a bit, by this time the crowds that had gathered to shout you on had gone towards the finish to watch who was going to be crowned Scottish Champion, this year for the first time was young Ally Hay who was crowned Under 20 champion a few years ago(Central)runner so well to him, I could see the usual suspects that were normally behind me but this time in front which is the motivation I need to get myself sorted and training hard again!

I was fourth counter for the club 76th which helped the club to it’s best ever placing as a mens team in the national.

Club Positions Total

1 Shettleston Harriers 3 11 12 13 21 28 88

2 Central AC 1 18 26 34 42 57 178

3 Hunters Bog T 16 22 23 36 37 46 180

4 Ron Hill Cambus 14 17 31 35 41 47 185

5 Edinburgh AC 20 25 56 63 65 72 301

Heading Out to Callendar Park, Falkirk for the National Cross Country Championships

Start time 2.30pm, an expected 300 runners are expected in the mens senior race which consists of 3 laps of an undulating 4 kilometer grassy course in the grounds of Callendar Park, Falkirk.

From a club point of view this is the last counter in our Grand Prix Cross Country season. As you can see from the sheet I’m curremtly lying in 6th position with 1 race in hand a top 8 Carnegie men’s finish today should clinch the Grand Prix as long as Kevin Mathie finishes no better than top fifth Carnegie male

Best Wishes to 3 Circuiteers this Weekend

PB020172PB020188PB020179

Gail Murdoch, Ryan McKenzie and Lynne Kuz pictured above who travel down to Rugby on Saturday for the Draycote 35miler on Sunday morning at 9.30am, both Gail and Lynne have ran more than this distance on the West Highland Way on trails they have also completed the distance plus more on the road last summer Gail winning the National title by completing the 100k or 62.5miles in 9 hours, Lynne ran that day in the 24 hour race, yes 24 hours non stop completing over 125miles.

The novice in the race shall be Ryan who has managed a marathon distance in training so to do another half on top in a race on tarmac shall be a major achievement for Ryan, the very fact he is trying it is a feat in itself!! Good luck to all, another friend Richie Cunningham is also taking part!

Session this evening

Might be a slight change, as I did say to most of the class on Monday that I shall be doing more weights, however due to the constraints/commitments today I may not have the Barbells/Dumbells so the session could be split with some running, resistence bands and the Steps if this is the case Friday’s session I plan to include the BARS and the DUMBells.

Session at Queenshall tonight averaging about 13 both classes which is a bloody good turnout see you there!!!!

Saturday’s Carnethy Hill Race

Well done to the Carnegie Men’s team who turned out 2nd in the Carnethy Hill race, Andy Symounds who was brilliant as ever coming in 3rd, Andy Wright who was in the top ten but was not counted in the team as he was too late at registration, that was a bummer! Wee Ritchie Cunningham, Pete Simpson and Scott Bradley all made up the team, congratulations!

I was touch and go all morning whether should I do it or not, so it was a difficult one as last year I also missed the race although I never entered it as I did this. However I thought with a chest cold and a tickly throat with a constant cough with my lungs burning it best be wise and go and walk round the course and take a few pictures which I have done and are now on my Flicker Page!
