The Fife Athletics club run the Devils Burden relay each year at this time, for non runners this is a team event which starts at the Village Hall car park in Falkland you and your partner run up to the top of East Lomond which is a bloody hard test with the added hazard of ice on the roads which was so bad that the race start had to be adjusted for safety reason, even the starter Adrian Davies fell while trying to move to the new starting position. You and your partner have to stay pretty close to each other until the finish where to hand over to another this time single runner, this continues again until the team finish after 4 legs back at the start, the reason for 2 runners at legs 1 and 3 is for safety going over East and West Lomonds which can be dangerous is bad weather.

Coming off East Lomond chasing the Leaders
Myself and John Hargreaves were lying 3rd in the race after climbing to the top of East Lomond, I took which I thought was the correct line down ended up being quite a bit out which lost me some time desending down to the Limekilns to catch Pete Simpson who beat me to the top of the East Lomond but who I caught coming down, chasing hard John and I couldn’t see the other two teams for about 15 seconds the sun was now in our eyes however when we hit the Kiln they had taken the longer route to the stile which allowed us to get on top of both teams still lying in third, running now on the flat section towards the next stile then to the road check point, John was breathing pretty heavy so I told him to go on and not to wait for me at the checkpoints, 2nd checkpoint still in third running up the road I was lying 20 meters from John who was not far behind the Ochill’s duo, I managed to catch up with John over the gate towards the Ballo fishery, Carnethy runners followed closly the Ochill’s took the longer right hand route which we had recce’d on numerous occasions but found a more direct route hugging the fence line directly in line with the stile and next checkpoint so again we were closing in and now on top of the Carnethy team, John didn’t wait straight over into the lead Carnethy tagged their route card I jumped the stile the two Ochil Runners were on the wrong side of the stile clipping their card once I got my card marked I was off before they could get over the stile. This left John 50 meters in front of me and 20 in front of Carnethy, I was off after Angela Mudge with the Ochills chasing me, I was feeling strong here as I knew we had a few wee challenges to do then a sprint down to the Water Station before the finish.

Picture of my teamate John Hargreaves
John became the gate opener with me in fourth postion now, getting into the steep downhill technical section there was no further gates to open, John was miles ahead by this point using his long skinny legs like a big gazelle to get away, while I was now just getting past Mudgie then setting my sights on their lead runner, over the bridge and I had overtaken their lead runner, I could have not have thought that we could be in this position but we were and I was 20 meters behind John about to start the final climb to the 200 metre finish line.
John had stopped as he was so far ahead he was scared he would have diaqualified our team if he had went on, he could hear all the Harriers shouting “Come on John” but he waited until I was close enough to him to belt it up the last 200 metre climb, this felt a bit like the time John and I were in 2 years ago chasing Carnethy at this point instead of being chased, Angela was flagging I thought and I was thinking run as hard as you can as every second counts. The crowd were brilliant there must have been a couple of hundred people shouted come on, we were in the lead going to win the first leg for our club Carnegie and I was so proud.
We had done a great job for the club now it was up to Scott Bradley to continue in first place, he done brilliantly clocking the 3rd fastest leg of the day being pipped for the 2nd best by a second but still in the lead, he held over to the clubs two super stars Andrew Wright and Symounds who had the hardest legs against British Champion Jethro Lennox and Tom Owens who recorded the fastest time for this leg last year, we were against it but the boys ran a fantastic Leg in 54mins allowing Shettleston only a little over a minute of the final leg, we lost a wee bit of time on the last leg which was not going to be our day to win, again supervet Ian Stewart ran brilliant clocking the 5th fastest time of the day on that leg, details of the results can be found by clicking on this link:
