Brief Update

Thanks last night for everybody who came along to the classes last night, there was a big crowd and the atmosphere was great, I know it was a hard class however I hope you felt the benefit this morning. After the class I watched the football where the team I massage once weekly were playing Celtic in the CIS Semi Final, I couldn’t believe how well they played and how close they were to going through to the final. Today was the morning after the night before and players and officials were a bit worse for wear as they never got back to Dundee until 2am this morning with a Training and Massage session today from 11-3pm.
Maryann had her 18 week scan at 4pm today, and the predictions are that so far no indications that it’s a boy, so maybe in the Summer the boys may have another sister to even up the sides a bit.

Going to the Carnegie Harriers training session today then massaging thereafter.

My Own Training Sunday 25th Jan

7.2 miles around Loch Fitty. When you enter Loch Fitty don’t use the normal entrance, use the entrance 250meters north until you see a house 20 meters by here turn in then the road comes to a dead end park your car and head under the barrier towards the Loch, the road goes into a V shapr take the left then an immediate right over a bridge onto some stones and you start anywhere here.

The route camber is awkward with mole holes and pretty technical bits to navigate round, follow the path round until you come to a track slight left then an immediate right through the trees for 700 meters take a right turn then the course terrain changes from grass to heavy sand carry on for 250meters over an old fallen down gate, this is your meeting up point on the route back, so carry on the same line for 80 meters then you follow the track round starting to climb here until you reach a big metal gate through here go up 15 meters this is where do a loop, so carry on doing to the course until you head back to this point the loop is hilly and a bit technical here as well do the whole loop in reverse then back down the metal gate back home John and I done the 7.2mile course in 45-48minutes, we were not holding back!

Remember no Class Monday night

My movements are:

Working with Andrew Baird(Active Schools Co-ordinator)and Local Nurse Fiona Todd at Dulloch Primary all morning and some of the afternoon. The nurses and Cardiac nurses are conducting Body Mass Index checks and giving the primary school children valuable information about the Heart and the benefits of healthy eating my job is to get the kids active and enjoy some exercise activities.

Dundee United Football Club by eamoncurry123.

Mid afternoon I have to travel down to meet up with Dundee United in Glasgow to conduct a four hour pre Semi Final Massage Therapy session with Club’s Physio Jeff Clark, United take on Glasgow Celtic at Hampden on Wednesday night for a place in the CIS Cup Final, it’s going to be a hard week for the troops.

So sorry to the 35 people plus that normally come along, this is a one off, we are back to normal business on Wednesday.

On Thursday I make the 46mile journey back up to Dundee mid morning hopfully with a win in the cup the night before to conduct another  four session for the clubs match with the other old firm Rangers in the Scottish League cup, a crunch game as United are chasing Rangers and trying to extend the gap between themselves Aberdeen and Hearts, things are hotting up with just over 10 matches to go!

Sunday’s Training

After Running Leg 1 yesterday John had to leave sharp so I was planning on doing some extra training so Ryan McKenzie, who is planning on doing the Highland Fling race http://www.highlandflingrace.org/ at the end of April decided he would join me heading up towards West Lomond passing the Harperleas reservoir then after getting down to the checkpoint after West Lomond heading down to the finishline via the old route that was 75mins of running and probably 8 miles on top of our 4 and a half on leg1.

Total climbing 2000feet 13miles running total.

Sunday myself and John planned on going up to Loch Fitty near Kingseat, this is a great cross country area with undulating camber the ground is soft muddy wet slippy and very cold and heavy so it’s great for strength gaining, mu left groin has been pretty painful these last few weeks and I could feel it tight especially on a cold early start with 13 miles hard yesterday applying it’s toll.

Anyway got started and the pace for comfortable but not hanging about, that being said the conversation stopped and the pace gradually increased and increased until I felt as if I was racing. We done a full normal loop but before the iron gate we turned left back up and done another loop headed the opposite way up towards the chicken plant over the bridge then all the way to the Loch via the iron fence where I had to throw in the towel in I was knackered and had to stop, my breathing was ok but in oxygen depth but my legs were gone, I told John to carry on and I would meet up at the end which was about 1k away, which I done. I was glad to be finished, John ran well and confessed that he felt he ran better today than at the race, I would have to agree!  Good to see him back though

110 Relay Teams Each Team having 6 people per team our team 2nd

The Fife Athletics club run the Devils Burden relay each year at this time, for non runners this is a team event which starts at the Village Hall car park in Falkland you and your partner run up to the top of East Lomond which is a bloody hard test with the added hazard of ice on the roads which was so bad that the race start had to be adjusted for safety reason, even the starter Adrian Davies fell while trying to move to the new starting position.  You and your partner have to stay pretty close to each other until the finish where to hand over to another this time single runner, this continues again until the team finish after 4 legs back at the start, the reason for 2 runners at legs 1 and 3 is for safety going over East and West Lomonds which can be dangerous is bad weather.

Coming off East Lomond chasing the Leaders

Myself and John Hargreaves were lying 3rd in the race after climbing to the top of East Lomond, I took which I thought was the correct line down ended up being quite a bit out which lost me some time desending down to the Limekilns to catch Pete Simpson who beat me to the top of the East Lomond but who I caught coming down, chasing hard John and I couldn’t see the other two teams for about 15 seconds the sun was now in our eyes however when we hit the Kiln they had taken the longer route to the stile which allowed us to get on top of both teams still lying in third, running now on the flat section towards the next stile then to the road check point, John was breathing pretty heavy so I told him to go on and not to wait for me at the checkpoints, 2nd checkpoint still in third running up the road I was lying 20 meters from John who was not far behind the Ochill’s duo, I managed to catch up with John over the gate towards the Ballo fishery, Carnethy runners followed closly the Ochill’s took the longer right hand route which we had recce’d on numerous occasions but found a more direct route hugging the fence line directly in line with the stile and next checkpoint so again we were closing in and now on top of the Carnethy team, John didn’t wait straight over into the lead Carnethy tagged their route card I jumped the stile the two Ochil Runners were on the wrong side of the stile clipping their card once I got my card marked I was off before they could get over the stile.  This left John 50 meters in front of me and 20 in front of Carnethy, I was off after Angela Mudge with the Ochills chasing me, I was feeling strong here as I knew we had a few wee challenges to do then a sprint down to the Water Station before the finish.

Picture of my teamate John Hargreaves

John became the gate opener with me in fourth postion now, getting into the steep downhill technical section there was no further gates to open, John was miles ahead by this point using his long skinny legs like a big gazelle to get away, while I was now just getting past Mudgie then setting my sights on their lead runner, over the bridge and I had overtaken their lead runner, I could have not have thought that we could be in this position but we were and I was 20 meters behind John about to start the final climb to the 200 metre finish line.

John had stopped as he was so far ahead he was scared he would have diaqualified our team if he had went on, he could hear all the Harriers shouting “Come on John” but he waited until I was close enough to him to belt it up the last 200 metre climb, this felt a bit like the time John and I were in 2 years ago chasing Carnethy at this point instead of being chased, Angela was flagging I thought and I was thinking run as hard as you can as every second counts. The crowd were brilliant there must have been a couple of  hundred people shouted come on, we were in the lead going to win the first leg for our club Carnegie and I was so proud.

We had done a great job for the club now it was up to Scott Bradley to continue in first place, he done brilliantly clocking the 3rd fastest leg of the day being pipped for the 2nd best by a second but still in the lead, he held over to the clubs two super stars Andrew Wright and Symounds who had the hardest legs against British Champion Jethro Lennox and Tom Owens who recorded the fastest time for this leg last year, we were against it but the boys ran a fantastic Leg in 54mins allowing Shettleston only a little over a minute of the final leg, we lost a wee bit of time on the last leg which was not going to be our day to win, again supervet Ian Stewart ran brilliant clocking the 5th fastest time of the day on that leg, details of the results can be found by clicking on this link:

John Hargreaves and myself lead the Carnegie Charge

Saturday 24th Jan, see the start of the 2 and a half hour round trek crosscountry from Falkland Village hall over the Lomond hills and back to the start tomorrow at 10am two years ago John and I were 2nd after the first leg a position that the club finally ended up with after nearly winning it, last year we were out of the top three so we are keen to get back into the position, we have a strong side so we shall wait and see!

Tuesday 20th Training

The plan today was to run up a hill for 40 mins plus, this never happened today for a few reason’s, namely time constraints through work which is a good cause, had some time later on at 6pm so I decided to go out and decide as I went, I managed just over an hour covering around 8 miles, hamstrings, calfs quads still very tight from the weekend and still cannot tie down my massage therapist to get me straighted out. Nearing the later stages of my run felt better taking in the trails behind Queen Anne High school, Wed the plan is for 6x5mins round the paths of Calais Muir Woods or Tesco(Dulloch Park) at 4pm.
