Meall a’Bhuachaille Recce

Sunday had myself Stevie King and Maryann going up this hill which I knew was in the Calendar in November, it was good to get an idea of how it was with a wee reece of it the day after the Ghru. Starting off from Glenmore Lodge going round the east side of the Hill up to the Bothy then up the recognised track which was runnable in sections with Stoney steps in places.  On starting we had great views of the Cairngorms then the clouds came and we had Hail and Snow on our ascend to the top.  Got to the top then down the other as the weather and time were against us.  On the other side we could have carried on over the ridge decided to cut back to get the rest of the crew back in Loch Morlich, beautifull descend with pine trees and hugh canopies of trees, can’t wait to do this again!  Met up with the crew for some well earned rest and Irish Cream Lumpy Bumpty cake!!!!!!!!!

Recce of Lairig Ghru

A successfull recce of the Ghru on Saturday morning a mammoth beast of a race.  The start was dry and pretty warm with a wee wind. Got out onto the road and the body temperature started to rise.. The road section continued for 4-5miles what I can remember is that when we started off road the track was Ok a bit like the Westhighland way etc, then a rivercrossing, Stevie King went first, but slipped and ended up lying in the river with water coming out his shorts!  Myself and the girls, Helena, Gail and Lynne all went the dry way which would add 2 mins at least to your time!

The other side we started to hit slight gradients but the stone were hard to navigate round this was nothing for what was in store later.  Got to the bothy then round the corner, the route starts here, the path gets worse with upturned stones that get bigger by the mile, gradient gets higher the wind starts to hit you coming up the funnel of the Ghru, hit the Pools then the boulders I’ve never seen the like of before, I was wondering why the walkers were carrying Ski Poles now I know!!! This lasted for about a mile after this you started to descent but the heather was covered by stones everywhere which was murder on the ankles and your balance!

Then you get over that into peat bog which is suppose to be a path, by this time you can see the trees of Rothiemurchus and the potential near end!  The path again is shrewn big boulders and stones for another mile of so before you get into the woods.

Getting to run in the woods brings it’s own problems your tired you have been running on uneven surfaces which are the most technical I’ve done to date, like me you running along with your toes coming off the ground by 2 milimeters when I tripped on a tree root the next thing I could see was a boulder moving very fast to the head to save myself I put my hands out to rip your arms rather than to have a boulder bounce off your head!!!Unbelievable!!!!!The rest of the run is good decending in the forest going into a flat for about 2 miles, get to the Caravan Park 3 miles to go on road, this is bloody hard in itself!!!!!Glad to have done it but you need to watch your sugar intake take plenty of water and calories and treat it with the respect it deserves!!!!!!

Thursday 15th May

I had a terrible cough over the last few days which I have been spreading round the gym which is not the most positive thing to say however you have to work, I think the Half Marathon has surpressed the old Immune System, so I had to take the morning off to try and recover.

1.30pm Done a 13 miler, 85 mins from my normal starting point from home up towards Kingseat, to Cowdenbeath back through Crossgates, felt strong on the way back especially last 2 miles.

Friday’s plan to do 4×2.26

Saturday Lairig Ghru 28 miler in 4.30hours starting at 0900.

Sunday an easy hill session

next week Edinburgh Marathon as a training run <2.45hours

10th Place in Dunfermline Half 1.14.18

1st half of the year, done Inter Districts never really got off as I had a slow start and the course was difficult to get round other runners who were in front!

Over 700 starters in Dunfermline, 10th finisher, 1st Local 4th Year in a row a feat never done before two previous winners had done it 3 times including Nigel Cunningham who I expected to be running after doing well in the 10k on Wednesday.

As stated by Iain Taylor I was 2nd Male Vet by SAF rules and myself Scott Bradley and Ian Johnstone were 3rd Scottish Team!

Friday’s Circuit Class

5 Hardy souls namely Sharon & Ryan McKenzie, Malcolm Weir, Stevie Greer and Ricky Connelly came along to the class last night.  Where we split the room into two different sections.

1st section which took up 75% of the room section 2 which we done floor and step work, all resistence!

I think although a small class a very effective one!

Stuc O’Chroin 08,Hill Race.22k’s, 1500 mts high!

start.jpgrichie-cunningham.jpgnothing-in-the-legs.jpgstevie-king-glen-ample-homeward.jpgcolin-reynoulds.jpgleading-group.jpgtl.jpgeventual-winner-brian-marshall.jpgrich.jpgstevie.jpgalan-mcaulay.jpgoutward-bound.jpg2nd-group.jpgandy.jpgrichie.jpgalan-m.jpgbeinn-each.jpg

Friday night had came and one sleep until the Stuc race, I was so looking forward to it after last week’s successfull recce with Pete Humphries!

The weather, the skies were grey, dry, temperature about 8 degrees with a slight wind pretty perfect for a race, yeaterday was beautifully sunny in the morning then turning  into some slight rain spells but the previous few days were pretty wet so the underfoot conditions were going to be tough!

Race started at 1pm, conditions were as they were above, I started slow and felt great along the track which was just over 2 miles long, up through the forest then into the farmers field hogging the fence line, this was a long drag and energy sapping as the camber is very undulating and wet underfoot in places, gets to the top and heading down to Glen Ample, felt very very relaxed and chasing the Dutch boy how beat me two weeks ago at Clacnaben.  I overtook him decending into the valley, he was stronger than me going going up Beinn Each but he was only 10-20 away nearer the top I was been shadowed by Mark Harris from Fife.  I was slighly quicker on the straight yet he was better on the ascends, got to the top and I was bringing in Cameron Watson from Pitreavie a mix up with the marshalls at the top as they tried to mark my number but I didn’t hang about, I had lost time on Cameron down towards the Caber, the sun was now coming out and I was feeling great, still again on the flat got a bit of breathing space from Mark behind but he was catching me on the rock climb, the technical rocky section of the course managed to hold him off until the first quarter of the ascend to the Stuc, by this time Brian, Simon Stewart and Keith had all past with you trying to mentally keep focused!

Got to the top of the Stoc, a bit windy and marshalls were very upbeat and generous with the sweeties and chocolate which was very much appreciated!!!!!  Tried to relax myself and give encouragment to the people coming up maybe I was trying to mask the pain, I think I was trying too hard here I got to the bottom and started the climb again before turning left over the hard rocky parts past Colin, I suddenly felt pretty low I always seemed to take these just after taking in a high sugar content, Colin and commented that my eyes had gone which was proably not far from the truth.  Mark Harris and Cameron Watson were out of sight by now I was still feeling a bit low carried on walking albeit, Andy Sim past me still feeling a bit crap yet I got onto a flat part then I was carrying a bit of momentum then bang my foot went from under me a shooting pain up my ankle.  I couldn’t move it I tried to walk nothing I looked up at the small figures on Beinn Each which seemed millions of miles away, I couldn’t believe I was hurtling down there not 20 mins earlier now nothing.  My plan of relaxing, concentrating on my own personal race and trying to perserve my body had been blown!!!!!! The weather was now drawing in I had sat for maybe 1-2minutes when I decided 1, got to keep warm so got my windproofs and hat on then wee Richie with Adrian Davies past me…..asking me if I was alright…..with the normal response Yea on you go….as if your OK as if anyone is going to stop….

I needed to get it moving again so I was not relying on anyone picking me up. Got up and moved ok I was only 100 meters from the decend of the Crossover point I was travelling slower down towards the sheep track heading for Glen Ample I was now only in 3rd gear perserving the ankle when 13th placed Adam Anderson from Carnethy past me got to Glen Ample started the climb back up when I saw Des Crowe with his dog, I must have lost 8-10 places now, going up that Heartbreak Hill I’m going to call it where I heard Alan Young is the familiar Aberdeen ascent”It’s yersel Tommy, well done” I needed to relax get my momentum back more sweeties at the top lost another place over the field into the forest bloody slipped someone else had taken me, now onto the track, 2.3 miles all down hill, thank god, ankle was not hurting at all going down, caught 1 guy after 500 meters then overtook another Westie Don Reid who stayed with me for about a mile while I opened up another wee bit until we were home, glad to be in the homeward straight and finished.

Final Sediments:  Everything was going pretty well to plan, I maybe got a wee bit panicky with Mark Harris up my back for a while, maybe I should not have pushed it on the rocks before the crossing point is probably my biggest fault. Stopping due to overstretching my ankle slowed me down considerably however I carried on to get finished and was glad to have done it, I plan to be up there during the summer for a few training runs.  The race had a better more quality field than this yeat comparing stats, I came in 24th I wouldn’t have made it in the top 50 last year!

Well done to all who ran and especially Richie who had just last week came in 4th the 53 mile Highland Fling! It’s now too late to check for spelling mistakes if you see any let me know!!
