Friday night had came and one sleep until the Stuc race, I was so looking forward to it after last week’s successfull recce with Pete Humphries!
The weather, the skies were grey, dry, temperature about 8 degrees with a slight wind pretty perfect for a race, yeaterday was beautifully sunny in the morning then turning into some slight rain spells but the previous few days were pretty wet so the underfoot conditions were going to be tough!
Race started at 1pm, conditions were as they were above, I started slow and felt great along the track which was just over 2 miles long, up through the forest then into the farmers field hogging the fence line, this was a long drag and energy sapping as the camber is very undulating and wet underfoot in places, gets to the top and heading down to Glen Ample, felt very very relaxed and chasing the Dutch boy how beat me two weeks ago at Clacnaben. I overtook him decending into the valley, he was stronger than me going going up Beinn Each but he was only 10-20 away nearer the top I was been shadowed by Mark Harris from Fife. I was slighly quicker on the straight yet he was better on the ascends, got to the top and I was bringing in Cameron Watson from Pitreavie a mix up with the marshalls at the top as they tried to mark my number but I didn’t hang about, I had lost time on Cameron down towards the Caber, the sun was now coming out and I was feeling great, still again on the flat got a bit of breathing space from Mark behind but he was catching me on the rock climb, the technical rocky section of the course managed to hold him off until the first quarter of the ascend to the Stuc, by this time Brian, Simon Stewart and Keith had all past with you trying to mentally keep focused!
Got to the top of the Stoc, a bit windy and marshalls were very upbeat and generous with the sweeties and chocolate which was very much appreciated!!!!! Tried to relax myself and give encouragment to the people coming up maybe I was trying to mask the pain, I think I was trying too hard here I got to the bottom and started the climb again before turning left over the hard rocky parts past Colin, I suddenly felt pretty low I always seemed to take these just after taking in a high sugar content, Colin and commented that my eyes had gone which was proably not far from the truth. Mark Harris and Cameron Watson were out of sight by now I was still feeling a bit low carried on walking albeit, Andy Sim past me still feeling a bit crap yet I got onto a flat part then I was carrying a bit of momentum then bang my foot went from under me a shooting pain up my ankle. I couldn’t move it I tried to walk nothing I looked up at the small figures on Beinn Each which seemed millions of miles away, I couldn’t believe I was hurtling down there not 20 mins earlier now nothing. My plan of relaxing, concentrating on my own personal race and trying to perserve my body had been blown!!!!!! The weather was now drawing in I had sat for maybe 1-2minutes when I decided 1, got to keep warm so got my windproofs and hat on then wee Richie with Adrian Davies past me…..asking me if I was alright…..with the normal response Yea on you go….as if your OK as if anyone is going to stop….
I needed to get it moving again so I was not relying on anyone picking me up. Got up and moved ok I was only 100 meters from the decend of the Crossover point I was travelling slower down towards the sheep track heading for Glen Ample I was now only in 3rd gear perserving the ankle when 13th placed Adam Anderson from Carnethy past me got to Glen Ample started the climb back up when I saw Des Crowe with his dog, I must have lost 8-10 places now, going up that Heartbreak Hill I’m going to call it where I heard Alan Young is the familiar Aberdeen ascent”It’s yersel Tommy, well done” I needed to relax get my momentum back more sweeties at the top lost another place over the field into the forest bloody slipped someone else had taken me, now onto the track, 2.3 miles all down hill, thank god, ankle was not hurting at all going down, caught 1 guy after 500 meters then overtook another Westie Don Reid who stayed with me for about a mile while I opened up another wee bit until we were home, glad to be in the homeward straight and finished.
Final Sediments: Everything was going pretty well to plan, I maybe got a wee bit panicky with Mark Harris up my back for a while, maybe I should not have pushed it on the rocks before the crossing point is probably my biggest fault. Stopping due to overstretching my ankle slowed me down considerably however I carried on to get finished and was glad to have done it, I plan to be up there during the summer for a few training runs. The race had a better more quality field than this yeat comparing stats, I came in 24th I wouldn’t have made it in the top 50 last year!
Well done to all who ran and especially Richie who had just last week came in 4th the 53 mile Highland Fling! It’s now too late to check for spelling mistakes if you see any let me know!!
