Lucy Colquhoun took a superb bronze medal in the IAU World Ultra Trail Championship held in Connemara, on the west coast of Ireland, at the weekend.

406 Pictures from the World trail Championships can be found HERE

Over a punishing 70km (40mile) course, Colquhoun was content to run her own race in the early stages, lying in 12th place at the first checkpoint at 12km, the strong teams from Italy and France making the early running. After the steep climb and descent over Benbaum (729 met) she had moved up to 6th, maintaining this until approximately 40km(25miles). The second journey over Benbaum saw Colquhoun record the second fastest split and move up to third. A strong run over the last, fairly flat, 10km where she had the fastest split, saw her consolidate the bronze medal position to finish in 7 hours 50 minutes 20 seconds. The women’s event was won by Maud Gilbert of France in 7.41.31, with Italy’s Cecilla Mora second in 7.50.02.

The Carnethy athlete, who had only 2-3months consistent training after a winter interrupted by small injuries, was delighted with her run. “It was a really brutal, but beautiful course, with steep climbs, technical rocky descents, and also some serious boggy ground. I was up to my knees in mud at one stage. On the second big climb I caught and passed three of the French and Italian girls, which gave me confidence to push on in the final stages.”

She plans to have an easy couple of weeks before building up to September’s Commonwealth ultra trail race in North Wales.

In the men’s race Forfar Road Runners’ Craig Stewart, winning his first GB vest, ran a solid race to finish in 7 hr 47min 00 sec. in a race won by Eric Clavery of France. The Frenchman won by just over  a minute from the Canadian Jason Loutit; 6.39.07 to 6.40.32. He too found the course challenging especially the boggy sections, where at one point he was in deeper than his knees!

Kate Jenkins and Craig Mattocks (HBT) both had solid runs in the concurrent open race.

Wee Ritchie Wins 95miler West Highland Way today in 16hrs 24min, what a guy!

Ritchie pictured down below on the left, was defending his title from last year and had focused in on this race a one of his main goals of the this year which has undoubtely worked for him as he beat a quality international field in a brilliant time of 16hrs 24mins.

Ritchie is a regular advocate  for Massage which I’m fortunate & proud that he comes along to myself.

Surely an international call up shall now follow again!

Lasted 21.43miles at Edinburgh’s Marathon, here are my stats, well done to everybody to done it!

Heard from Kirsty Arcibold that I was lying in 12 position, don’t know where this was, I was with the first 2 ladies until 11miles, they were slipping a bit as we were averaging 5.54 to here, I felt we were moving in the wrong direction so I pushed on feeling okay with no problems, at this point I was running myself which felt more like a training run, legs were tightening after a few miles at this pace plus the averages were again going in the wrong direction.

Got to the 20mile turn round and the wind was murder my legs were not really going very well at all, but I thought 20 miles were  just outside 2 hours, just keep going at 4mins per kilometre and we should be inside 2.45, but as the time was going on the tightness was getting progressively worse, I was not hating it and I felt I was now going backwards so I  stopped the watch at 21.43miles.

In retrospect the 26 was a risk, I had not really done this in training, I’m used to running at 5.40-6min miles in races and 6.40 in training, when I start to slide I’m in trouble.

The training had being going well until I had my chest infection 5-7 weeks ago, I was  getting up to 22miles with 4 weeks of opportunity to do a few 26-27′s, this wasn’t to be after the infection, with the maximum of 18 in training done post infection with the exception of the 23.4 mile Cateran Trail 2 weeks ago which felt very much like what I felt today.

Lessons taken from today, more distance training runs proposed over the next quarter of the year which should help with the Dunfermline Half next month.
