Tommy’s been asked by Active Kids Fife in conjuction with NHS Fife to assist with the next Primary 1 health checks in all Primary schools in West Fife.

This shall be our 4th year consecutively which is a great honour.  West Fife Active Kids Co-ordinator Andrew Baird who is based in Dunfermline’s Queen Anne High School called me yesterday to ask if I could help put again for next year’s Primary 1′s health checks which shall start after the October holidays. The commitment runs right through mid February.  Straight after this, we then take on the same concept for the older P7′s which shall be a new challenge, this shall conclude just before the summer holidays in 2012.

The whole Primary 1 Health Check concept.

It’s legislation now in Scotland that every child in Scotland shall have a Height, Weight check, if there is any problems then their details get referred to another local council body who looks at ways in trying to sort this under or over weight situation.

As you can imagine I’m looking forward to it!

Kids Health & Fitness awareness links and useful info.info

http://www.takelifeon.co.uk/

The Scottish Government’s new Take Life On campaign launched on Monday 17 January 2011.

The campaign aims to encourage Scots to take small achievable steps towards eating healthier and being more physically active.

The first phase of the campaign to be launched this month will focus for the first time on children, specifically targeting the parents of those aged 7 – 11, in a bid to help motivate behaviour change and help reduce childhood obesity.

For children, the recommended physical activity levels are 60 minutes a day of moderate activity per day, however research suggests almost two thirds of Scottish parents are unaware of this (Source: HITS data, April 2010).

http://www.jogscotland.org.uk/junior/junior_introduction

Junior jogscotland provides a fun and simple way to get children active in Scotland. The programme of running related games can be used for as little as a 10 minute run around for your young ones to let off steam and stretch their legs, to more sustained running games which can last for up to an hour at a time and be carried out over a longer period of time, like a mileage challenge.

Junior jogscotland offers a range of games suitable for primary school aged children. The games can be a perfect way to introduce youngsters to different athletic activities, as well as teaching the fundamentals of athletics such as balance, co-ordination, flexibility and the importance of team work.

jogscotland Manager Alistair Currie said: “The junior jogscotlandprogramme has proven popular with even the most unsporty of children. By incorporating fun, active games into the daily routines of youngsters, a behavioural change can be achieved when it comes to how youngsters view physical activity. Junior jogscotland proves that you don’t have to be sporty to enjoy being active!”

PM defends school sports funding plans BY PETE HAYMAN

Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged to ‘look carefully’ at the future of school sport funding.

Cameron told Prime Minister’s Questions today (1 December) that there is a “shared interest” in developing competitive sport in schools.

In October’s Comprehensive Spending Review, the government withdrew funding for School Sport Partnerships (SSPs), a decision that has been criticised by elite athletes and headteachers.

However, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister denied reports hinting at a government rethink on scrapping SSPs and that more details would be revealed in due course.

Cameron said: “The culture and education secretaries are working hard on this. We’re talking with headteachers so we make sure what we can come up with actually works on the ground.”

It follows a parliamentary debate on 30 November, in which former culture secretary Andy Burnham told MPs: “There is a formidable force lining up against the government and the chorus of disapproval grows by the day.”

However, education secretary Michael Gove argued that cash allocated to SSPs had not been spent “as effectively and efficiently as it should have been”.

A Youth Sport Trust spokesperson said: “We were delighted to see a debate in the House of Commons yesterday on school sport and the strong cross-party support for school sport partnerships.

“We continue to be inspired by the passionate and committed people who work within school sport partnerships, creating opportunities for every youngster to take part in school sport.”

Earlier this week, 75 Olympic and Paralympic athletes wrote to the Prime Minister urging him not to “destroy any hopes” of a legacy from the 2012 Games.

Starting with Active Kids this Thursday & Friday morning

Via Andrew Baird an Active Kids co-ordinator I have been asked to come along for an hour or so over the next few months to deliver small fitness classes to Primary 1′s at numerous schools in Fife.  This venture is in conjunction with working with NHS Fife, where nurses shall be looking at Health issues, with the Heart being a particular focus, together we shall be showing why exercise is important and what the bodies reponse is to exercise, should be interesting. 60min kid is part of Active Kids which is part funded through the council.  Other potential ventures that Andrew is keen for me to tackle is working with Overweight/Obese Kids in identifing, working with, monitoring eating and exercise plans, so watch this space.
